Battle of Belleau Wood, France

During this battle, the Armed Forces of the United States attacked a fortified position on a hill in the woods manned by
German machine gun crews.
It is reported that following the battle, the Americans were in the town of Belleau drinking from the “Devil Dog Fountain”.
As the German prisoners walked by, they called the Americans “Devil Dogs” (Teufelshunde). The German word was erroneously translated into TEUFELHUND.
